This month we are taking a sneak peek at some of the new phones coming for 2020. With bendable phones, 5G, and Artificial Intelligence on the way, it looks set to be an exciting time.
So, if you are looking at getting an upgrade, or buying a new phone, then it could be worthwhile waiting to see which new phones will be available in 2020. As already mentioned, the two major innovations that are on everyone’s minds this year are the spread of 5G and the increase in popularity with phone producers of the foldable phone.
So what exactly is 5G and how is it better than 4G?
5G is the new system for transforming and transmitting data over the air. At the moment, 4G is used by most modern phones for this purpose, such as streaming video from sites such as Netflix, Youtube, etc., making voice calls and downloading information. However, in areas of high population density, there can be lag experienced when using 4G as the interface is optimised to support four thousand devices per square kilometre. 5G raises this quantity to around a million devices per square kilometre and, therefore, promises faster speeds, reduced congestion on networks and less lag.
A foldable smartphone, according to Wikipedia is ‘a form factor of a smartphone which allows access to a larger, tablet-like display or a ‘phablet’ when needed by unfolding the device, while maintaining a similar footprint and functionality to a standard smartphone when folded (typically along a vertical axis).
The screen may either wrap around to the back of the device when folded… or use a booklet-like design where the larger, folded screen is located on the interior, and a screen on its “cover” allows the user to interact with the device without opening it …’
Having said this, 5G is not available to many people at the moment, and foldable phones are likely to be out of the financial reach of most users for some time. So, the usual suspects of long battery life, excellent photographic capabilities and high-resolution screens are the things to look for when purchasing a new phone in 2020.
We all have our phone manufacturer of preference, but it pays to shop around when you decide to upgrade, to see which manufacturer is offering the best technology.
